The Jewish community of Wysokie Litewskie was on a rise contained in a loop of the Pulva River. During the spring run-off, the Pulva sometime ran wild, explanding to many times its normal width. At other times, it was a modest stream, used for swimming and washing clothes.

Post war land-reclamation and flood control work controlled the fluctuations: the Pulva is now very well-behaved.
