Old photos tell us that the pre-war town square was used for the regular markets. There was a long, narrow building containing indoor stalls. Outside the building was an empty area to accomodate outdoor stalls and the horses-and-wagons that brought farm products to town. At times semi-permanent stalls were also present.
The Germans destroyed the market building.
Under Soviet rule, the square was converted to park land. Trees were planted. A memorial to Soviet war dead was added at one end.
