Dorothy's manuscript is introduced by this photo and its caption:

Mother and myself at the age of two

On the back of this photo, written in almost effaced Yiddish script:

Lieber Judel:

Die bild is zeir nisht gut aroisegekumen. Ich sheim zach dir zu shiken azelche mises. Abi si kost mir 3 rubel -- nor dos is farfalen. Ober duz zolst nisht lachen veil ich hob nisht getrofen kein andern. Nisht mer gib ich oys dein gelt. Genug oyf di narishkeiten.

Gris alemen fun mir, deine Raize.
Dear Judel:

The picture came out very bad. I'm ashamed to send it to you, it's so ugly. And it cost me three rubles, which were wasted. But you should not make fun of me because I could not find a better photographer. I will not spend any more of your money. Enough of this foolishness.

Regards to everybody. -- Your Raize.

Editor's Notes: As Dorothy was born around 1908, this photo would have been taken about 1910. It might be guessed that photography had not yet attained the popularity and availability in Wysokie that it attained later, during the interwar period. We may infer that the inscription is from Dorothy's mother, Raize (Raizel) in Wysokie to her husband, Judel, who was at the time in America.

This material is from the original front photo and the original front photo caption.
