World War I
World War I started in mid-summer 1914. Jews were frantic to keep their sons from conscription. All conversations were abut the war. The Jews were privately pro-German. Refugees appeared and commodities became scare. Russian soldiers arrived in Wysokie.Jews hid in their houses. Dorothy's family passed the time by singing. With newspapers lacking, news reaching the town was not very reliable. Fortunately, the 1914 Fall harvest was plentiful.

Wysokie was attacked by airplanes dropping bombs.
