News of the war reached us by word of mouth since there weren't any newspapers. This gave vent to fantastic tales and exaggerations.
On occasion, a Jewish soldier would pass through and would be invited to someone's home for supper. A few of the important Jews would also be asked to come and hear what was going on at the battle-front. But often the young soldier had not even been to the front and the news he divulged was worthless. Still it was a contact and by piecing bits together and adding others from hearsay, this “news” was circulated.

Editor's Notes: Newspapers: the usual newspapers were not published or did not reach the town due to the war.
