Brest-Litovsk was the city we came to [first]. There were tall buildings, sidewalks, street cars without horses and lots of lots of people. We walked great distances and I was always pulled by the hand. We stayed in a rooming-house with a Jewish lady who came into our room and talked and talked. She made us feel uncomfortable but mother wanted to be polite. Finally we took another train.

    | Editor's Notes: Kraus remarks on “street cars without horses”, implying that she was accustomed to the horse-drawn kind. Where could she have seen them? Certainly not in Wysokie.
