The Jewish Women
The womenfolk in the ghetto were the business people. They were the draiers (the doers), while the men were the scholars, the pious ones. The women were often big and strong. They looked after the store, they went to market, drove the horse and wagon, had umpsteen children, took care of the house, cooked and baked, while the men spent their time in the synagogue, studying the Talmud (early Jewish law), now and then napping between the pages.

Editor's Note: umpsteen is a variant of umpteen. See the Subject Index for a summary of Dorothy's descriptions of women's entrepreneurship in Wysokie.
