My Mother's Embroidery

embroidery
An example of the embroidery my mother prepared for her marriage.

The Russian text, Ах Вы, Сени, Мои Сени, is the title and first line of a traditional Russian folk song, according to Wikipedia here. It tells the story about a girl who is in love with a young brewer, Vanya. But her strict father forbids them to see each other.

Editor's Notes:
During this period in the U.S. such needlework was commonly part of a bride's trousseau, a component of her education for homemaking. This likely mirrored a similar tradition in Wysokie Litewskie. Note that the image and song are purely folk-Russian; there is nothing Jewish about them. What does this suggest about the amount and flavor of cultural interchange between our ancestors and their Slavic neighbors?
