Notes: Gaon: honored sage, or: genius, referring to a particularly accomplished rabbi-scholar. Eliezer Makovetsky adds: When it is written about someone: הרה"ג זצ"ל = HRH"G ZTz"L= the Rabbi Gaon, blessed be the memory of a Righteous, especially when the two titles appear together, and especially at a time when titles were not bestowed lavishly like today, it seems reasonable that he was a prominent figure in his community as a Rabbi or at least as a great sage. Visoki, in Litovsk: Certainly indicates our Visoki Litovsk. |
