The Tragic Death of Isaac-Yakov in Petakh Tikva, 1903.
By permission of the Historical Jewish Press
Petakh Tikvah – on Monday, 5th of Shvat, a very sad thing happened in our village. The blacksmith Isaac Visoker was fixing the upper well in our village --the depth of which is twenty five meters-- and while working to move the wheel, he slipped and fell back into the well, head down. As he fell he hit his head... and went all the way down. Only a very low sigh was heard from him as he fell. People who witnessed the accident cried for help and oen rang the big bell in the court of the administration office, as that is the custom in the villages: Whenever there is some trouble they ring the big bell to assemble the inhabitants. Many people gathered in the place and some went down the well. Howeve , the poor man sank like lead in the water and only parts of bones of his skull floated on the water. They brought the body up with cables and our doctor Shtein hurried to the him, but there was nothing to be done. The body was taken to his house and the whole family cried bitterly; thire screams were heart-breaking. Some rode to the orchards and the vineyards to all the people of the village because most were working in the fields. Many hurried to come over to the village and by evening they buried the man and many people accompanied him to the cemetery. The deceased was forty-five years old and left behind a wife and six sons.

Condolences….

Avraham Visoker, nephew of the deceased.
Notes: Isaac-Yakov had a nephew named Isaac.
